Focused on the newest development of international science and technology and oriented to the national major strategic demand, the International Center of Future Science (ICFS) is dedicated to carry out scientific frontier research and applied research, introduce international top-ranking talents and train students among the best of the world, through international cooperation and interdisciplinary collaboration. It aims to bring out epoch-making academic thoughts and new outstanding interdisciplinary results, and strives to build a world-class center for science and innovation.

Established in 2016, ICFS serves as a major academic window and a special talents zone of JLU led by Professor YU Jihong, the academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and fellow of The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS). A Strategic Advisory Board composed of top international scientists such as the Nobel Prize laureates and an Academic Committee consisting of Chinese and foreign academicians were set up to provide strategic planning and supervision, academic evaluation and intellectual support for ICFS, respectively. As a platform for international exchange and cooperation, ICFS enjoys world-class working conditions and environment. In 2017, it became the first “International Talent Recruitment Center” co-founded by the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs and a university. In 2018, it was recognized by the Ministry of Science and Technology as the National Center for International Research. 

ICFS has 36 outstanding talents in various fields, among which are 9 Chinese and foreign academicians, 5 awardees of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars and 8 awardees of the National Science Fund for Outstanding Young Scholars. It has introduced or cooperated with more than 300 Chinese and foreign scientists in various ways, including over 30 Chinese and foreign academicians and over 50 internationally renowned scientists.

It has 9 research teams, which are Advanced Energy and Environmental Materials, High Pressure Science and Technology, Translational Immunology, Millimeter Microwave Technology and Applications, Advanced Metallic Materials, Strategic Advanced Electronic Materials, New Concept Materials, Paleontology and Paleochemistry, Artificial Intelligence. By way of “masters + teams”, each team is co-headed by foreign chief scientists (academicians from occident countries) and Chinese chief scientists (leading talents of JLU) to lead young scientists, excellent postdocs and outstanding graduate students to tackle key challenges together.

ICFS has built up a cooperation platform for scientific research and talent cultivation with the world’s top universities through bilateral joint research centers and world-leading scientists studios. It has set up the joint research center respectively with the University of Queensland, the University of Groningen, the University of Strasbourg, Deakin University and the Macquarie University, and has 100 overseas visiting experts every year.  

ICFS attaches great importance to the training of graduate students and regards it as one of the key tasks during its strategic development. It actively utilizes high-quality international faculty, provides an advanced training environment for graduate students. ICFS relies on the international network of academic cooperation to select and recommend outstanding graduate students to world-leading universities for 1-2 years of study, to develop their international vision and ability of international dialogue and enhance their core competitiveness.
